First Communion

We believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in the Eucharist. This is why Vatican II called the Eucharist “the source and summit of Christian life.” We believe this because Jesus said, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.” The children who will be receiving the Eucharist for the first time need to know that Jesus Christ is truly present in His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, in the Eucharist. Those who wish to have a child receive First Communion must meet the following requirements: • Child must be a registered member of St. Agnes or St. Cecilia. • Will receive the sacrament of Penance prior to their First Communion. • If the child was not baptized at St. Agnes or St. Cecilia, the child’s parents will provide a baptismal certificate from the parish where he or she was baptized. Summer Program

Totus Tuus

Totus Tuus, a Latin phrase meaning "totally yours," was the motto of Pope John Paul II. Taken from St. Louis de Montfort’s True Devotion to Mary, it signifies our desire to give ourselves entirely to Jesus Christ through Mary. Mission of Totus Tuus To inspire in young people a true longing for holiness, a deep desire for daily conversion, and an openness to their vocation by constantly challenging them to give themselves entirely to Christ through Mary and by continually strengthening their prayer lives in imitation of Her. All this is done in a way children and teens enjoy. St. Cecilia church will be hosting Totus Tuus June 26 – July 1, 2022. Confirmation 2023

Confirmation is the last of the three Sacraments of Initiation that your child receives. As with the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion, there are requirements that the students need to meet. The Diocese of Marquette requires two years of preparation beginning in 9th grade. Confirmation is received in 11th grade. Requirements for those in 9th and 10th grades for the 2022/23 school year: • The Confirmation candidate, and his or her parents, need to be registered members of St. Agnes, St. Cecilia, or Immaculate Conception, and a practicing Catholic (at least one parent). • Each Candidate is to sign a “Candidate Commitment” form. • Attendance at Confirmation sessions. • Mandatory attendance at the Confirmation retreats. The Diocese of Marquette requires one retreat per year of Confirmation preparation. St. Agnes Religious Education recommends Totus Tuus and Youth Encounter as retreats. If a candidate wishes to attend a different retreat, he or she must get approval to replace the retreat arranged for by St. Agnes Religious Education with the one he or she is choosing. Proof of attendance at that retreat must be provided. If the candidate does not attend retreats, then that candidate cannot and will not receive the sacrament of Confirmation until this requirement is satisfied. • At least 20 hours of service work is required. The 20 hours of service is broken down into two parts: 10 Parish hours and 10 community hours. More hours are encouraged. • Baptismal Certificate. If your son or daughter was baptized in a parish other than St. Agnes, St. Cecilia, or Immaculate Conception, then they must have a baptismal certificate from the parish where Baptism was received. • A sponsor must be chosen by October 26, 2022. The sponsor must be a confirmed, practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church, and at least 17 years old. The candidate’s parents cannot be his or her sponsor. If the sponsor is not a member of St. Agnes, St. Cecilia, or Immaculate Conception, a letter of recommendation from the individual’s pastor is required. • A Confirmation name is optional. If the candidate wishes to choose a Confirmation name, that name is to be that of a saint. There are a number of Catholic internet sites which are excellent sources of information about the saints. • Each candidate will have an interview. It is important that the appointment is kept or the office is notified that the candidate cannot keep the appointment. • Letter to the Bishop. This letter needs to be received by the Bishop a few weeks before Confirmation.

Disciplinary policy

• Disruptive or disrespectful behavior in the class could become a barrier for Confirmation. The Sacrament of Confirmation is an important sacrament which should not be received if the person is ill-prepared for it. Disruptive or disrespectful behavior is an indication that he or she is not spiritually mature for the sacrament. If necessary, Confirmation will be delayed until the candidate is ready to receive this sacrament. • A letter will be sent to the parents of anyone who seriously violates disciplinary policy. If the problem reoccurs, a parent must attend with the Candidate at the next session. If a problem occurs again, delay of the sacrament of Confirmation may follow.
